Stressful: Exam Time

By Brandy Dawson

Exam time is just around the corner, and the stress has hit RHS students. Studying all night is not the answer to our exam worries. Some helpful hints are as follows:

- During the day we tend to be less alert, therefore you should concentrate on simple tasks and save the difficult tasks for when you are more alert.

- Study in intervals; reasonable intervals (30min. - an hour). Take a break to allow the information to sink in. Then go back and review.

- Cue cards are a great way to help remember important information.

- Get clarification on notes before heavy studying begins. It's hard to break what you've already learnt, so be sure what you've learnt is correct.

- Test yourself. Go through past tests, make up your own tests, or get friends to make one for you.

Exams are not something to get stressed over. They are simply to test whether you have paid any attention at all over the semester.

Take time to relax. Stress makes it harder to not only concentrate, but also psyches you out. Many students tend to know the material before an exam, but during the exam lose all memory. This may be caused by stress. Take the time to know how you learn best and how you can best cope with writing an exam.

I wish the best of luck to everyone.

Dealing with Exam Stress

We all know how stressful things can get around exam time. Aside from studying until your brain feels like it's going to explode and managing your time wisely, here are a few other tips to help you cope with the stress.

- Take time to have fun and relax between studying sessions. Making a schedule of study time and fun time will help you to stay organized and on-task.
- As soon as you begin to lose your focus while studying, take a quick break. Go for a walk, listen to some relaxing music or take a shower, do something that will make you feel refreshed. Make sure not to consume too much caffeine. Although drinking coffee or pop may seem like a good way to stay alert, you will have too much energy to focus, and then as the effects wear off, you will become more tired than you were to begin with. Instead, try a natural fruit juice, they contain plenty of healthy sugars and will give you the kick of energy you need.
- Eating healthy and regularly will allow your brain to benefit from the nutrients. Avoid foods with sugar and instead eat 'superfoods' such as berries, bananas, oily fish, nuts and broccoli. These foods will help boost your concentration, energy and mood.
- Get plenty of exercise. A brisk walk, swim or session in the gym will increase your energy levels, clear your mind and ease the feelings of stress.
- Close your eyes, taking several long, slow deep breaths. This will help you to clear your mind of all stressful thoughts. Think of things that make you happy or simply clear your mind.

Exam time can be a frustrating time for everyone, but hopefully these tips will help reduce your stress. Happy Studying!
